The 74-year-old had reportedly been sober for a decade
Aerosmith - and particularly the band's frontman, Steven Tyler - have long cultivated a reputation for being hard-living, wild rock 'n' roll types, particularly in their heyday in the 1970s and 1980s.
However, in more recent years, the band (now all in their seventies) have led a somewhat more sedate lifestyle and Tyler has been sober for over a decade.
However, the band revealed that they have been forced to cancel some of their upcoming shows after their 74-year-old frontman relapsed after taking pain medication following foot surgery.
Tyler has now gone into rehab, they said in a statement.
"As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years," it read. "After foot surgery to prepare for the stage and the necessity of pain management during the process, he has recently relapsed and voluntarily entered a treatment program to concentrate on his health and recovery.
"We are truly sorry to inform our fans and friends that we must cancel our first set of Las Vegas Residency dates this June and July while he focuses on his well-being."
Tyler has not released a personal statement or commented on the matter, but the band plan to resume touring in September.
