The singer also opened up about her divorce
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey for TV special 'Adele One Night Only' on CBS, Adele opened up much about her life and career.
Adele spoke about hitting the gym every day as working out with her trainer helped her manage her anxiety after her marriage ended.
She told Oprah: "Having these sort of pins in my day helped me keep myself together."
The 'Make You Feel My Love' singer never actively set out to lose weight and she doesn't want to be held up as a role model for others.
She said: "It's not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies.
"I'm trying to sort my own life out."
The singer also opened up about the heartache her late alcoholic father, Mark Evans, caused her when he left her at age three.
They reconciled before he passed away last May from bowel cancer.
Adele spoke tearfully about "my dad's absolute lack of presence and effort. But I finally understood that it was the alcohol.
"It took my dad from me."
The singer made the decision then to give up drinking and exercise more, reflecting: "After, I realised I had a lot of work to do on myself, so I stopped drinking and I started working out a lot to keep me centred."
Adele also spoke about being embarrassed and disappointed after splitting from ex-husband Simon Konecki.
She told Oprah: "I take marriage very seriously and it seems like I don't now almost like I disrespected it by getting married and then divorced so quickly. I am just embarrassed I didn't make my marriage work.
"From a very young age I promised myself that when I had kids that we will stay together, we would be that united family.
"And I tried for a really, really long time and then I was so disappointed for my son, I was so disappointed for myself and I thought I was going to be the one who stops doing those bloody patterns all the time."
During the special, which saw her give a live performance at Griffiths Observatory, Adele also orchestrated a surprise proposal for a couple of her fans.
'An Audience With Adele', which is a primetime special concert filmed at the London Palladium, will be broadcast on ITV on November 21.
