The Cavan-based DJ and producer has enjoyed huge success with his debut single 'Get Out of My Head'
Most people used last year's lockdown to bake banana bread or binge Netflix – but if you're Shane Codd, you use your time to write a track that's been streamed over 20 million times.
The young Cavan producer and DJ created 'Get Out of My Head' in his bedroom last year and has enjoyed massive success – even earning a deal with Polydor Records off the back of it. We caught up with him to hear more about his influences.
1. What’s the music that you listened to growing up, that you still listen to today?
'90s and 2000s dance music and EDM artists from the 2010s, like Avicii and Swedish House Mafia. There are a lot of influences for me; when I was a kid and we first moved to Cavan, we stayed in our school in Dublin as my mam worked in Dublin. We would commute 1.5 hours to Dublin every morning for school and we would often be stuck in traffic. All we had on the journeys was the radio and music. I would listen to music all the time on those journeys.
2. In three words, describe the minute before you walk on stage.
This is something I hope to feel when gigs start. At the minute, I've only played small shows but even they do be nerve-wracking. It's not until the music starts and people are dancing that I loosen up. I imagine on a huge stage it will be nerve wracking but also very exciting - this is something I look forward to.
3. How do you wind down after a gig?
I usually grab something to eat and chill out. After a few hours of playing, it's nice to relax as your ears can be sore.
4. You can only have three albums on your phone/in your house at any one time - what three would you pick for today?
Avicii – True
50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin'
Calvin Harris - 18 Hours
6. Name one record, one book and one film that everyone should hear / read / see.
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone, a timeless classic tune.
For a book I would probably say John Kavanagh's 'Win or Learn'.
For a movie - Interstellar, really enjoy that movie.
7. Pick the director and lead actor(s) for a biopic about your life.
Christopher Nolan because I love his movies, and Leo DiCaprio because he's my favourite actor.
8. You’re ordering take-away, what do you get?
Pizza and lots of it, garlic bread and dips.
9. Describe your perfect day off.
Going to a festival or a rave.
10. Tell us, in one sentence, why we should come to your next gig (whenever it may be.)
As a new artist I have the ability to surprise people and show them something new, so I will look to do that.
BONUS QUESTION: Recommend a podcast and tell us why we should subscribe to it.
I would recommend 'Deep Music Chats' by Emma Nolan, an Irish woman who hosts a radio show on FM104.
