Just imagine Attenborough is narrating your fights
In a recent Empire interview, we got all sorts of information around the inspiration behind the characters of Matt Reeves' 'The Batman'.
Zoë Kravitz has now had her say in what helped her to develop her Catwoman. She has a difficult job to show that Selina Kyle is not just a sly, stealthy cat-burglar. There's also a vicious and intense side to the character.
She spent a lot of time working with stunt co-ordinator Rob Alonzo in order to flesh out her fighting style. Most of that time was spent in the gym but it sounds like some of it came from sitting down and pouring over some nature documentaries.
"We watched cats and lions and how they fight. We talked about what is actually possible when you’re my size, and Batman’s so much stronger than me. What is my skill? It’s being fast and tricky. So we did some really interesting floor work that incorporated different kinds of martial arts and capoeira and a kind of feline, dance-like movement."
Kravitz added, "[Rob]’s not just trying to do a bunch of impressive backflips that wouldn’t be possible for that person to do, and he takes into account where we are in the story and where the characters are emotionally," explains Kravitz. "So it was really fun to work from that place."
It's obviously important to learn as much about your character as possible, but even more so for the birth of a character. Kravitz explained that this role is really the beginning for Catwoman. "This is an origin story for Selina. So, it’s the beginning of her figuring out who she is, beyond just someone trying to survive."
"I think there’s a lot of space to grow and I think we are watching her become what I’m sure will be the femme fatale."
In another Empire interview, it was revealed that a major influence behind Robert Pattinson's Batman was Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
