Woody Allen’s movie ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ may never see the light of day as it has been shelved by its production company Amazon Studios.
The movie had been slated for release this year but Amazon has now told Page Six, “No release date has ever been set for the film.”
‘A Rainy Day in New York’ is a romantic comedy starring Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez and Jude Law which finished shooting last autumn. This was before the #MeToo movement sparked renewed interest in the assault allegations levelled at Allen by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.
Allen has fervently denied the allegations but became increasingly controversial in recent months.
The allegations led to the stars of ‘Rainy Day’ distancing themselves from the film. Rebecca Hall has said she “regrets” working with the director while the lead of the movie, Chalamet, said “I don’t want to profit from my work on the film.” He donated his entire salary from the project to Time’s Up, the LGBT Centre in New York, and Rainn (the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).
Fellow cast member Griffin Newman also gave his earnings to Rainn, and branded himself “a coward” for not quitting the film.
Allen had signed a five-movie deal in 2016 with Amazon Studios. They reportedly struggled to convince cinemas to distribute the first film from that partnership, which was ‘Wonder Wheel’, and it became box office and critical flop.
Amazon is contractually obliged to release Allen’s latest, but for now ‘Rainy Day’, and Allen’s three other movies for Amazon from the deal, are in limbo.
