She put out a public call to the actress
For so many years, a third 'Sister Act' film seemed like nothing but a pipe dream.
That was until Disney+ gave the green light on the project in 2020, with Tyler Perry set to produce it. Goldberg recently said that she's 'liking the script', but a director has not yet been attached.
However, it seems that there is one major factor holding up production: Maggie Smith has yet to commit to the role of the Reverend Mother, which she played in both the 1992 film and its 1993 sequel 'Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit'.
And Goldberg is so keen to have the 88-year-old English Dame reprise her role, that she put out a public call to her on 'Loose Women'.
"One of the things that I want to make sure I do while I'm here is I want to let Maggie Smith know that I'm holding the part of Mother Superior for you," she said, looking directly at the camera. "Because I just can't do it with anybody but you."
She added: "So if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we have to do, we will do whatever you want us to do. But we don't want to do it without you, Maggie."
Other names in the frame for the sequel include Keke Palmer, Nicki Minaj and Lizzo - three names that Goldberg has previously mentioned that she wants for the film. Palmer, in turn, recently told the LA Times: "Whoopi, I'm ready. I'm ready for whatever you need from me. I'm here for the Lizzo and Nicki Minaj of it all as well."
C'mon, Maggie - give the people what they want!
