Both wide releases across the pond this week are unlikely to threaten the record breaking haul of The Dark Knight; but The X-Files: I Want To Believe and Step Brothers will have built in audiences that should see them post stellar numbers. Critically, both have garnered mixed responses from the American scribes. The highly anticipated X-Files sequel is a ponderous watch at times, but still well worth checking out. Legendary critic Roger Ebert agreed calling it "a skilful thriller", while The Arizona Republic thought that "The ingredients are still there for what made people love the series in the first place". On the naysaying front The Hollywood Reporter remarked that it was "A fairly routine crime procedural"; while Variety concurred saying "Director/franchise creator Chris Carter gives devoted fans plenty of small moments to swoon over, but the appeal should be limited beyond those fervent loyalists". Will Ferrell and John C Reilly headline the comedy Step Brothers, which should prove a hit for Ferrell - but the critics aren’t so sure. The Chicago Reader said "Ferrell and Reilly get more mileage out of juvenile pouting and bickering than any other performers I can imagine, but that's about as far as this goes."  Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers has been a dedicated fan of Ferrell though, and hasn’t changed his mind "Starting at infantile and regressing hysterically from there, Step Brothers flies on the comic chemistry of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly." X-Files: I Want To Believe is released here next week, while Step Brothers is scheduled for release in September
