Really good romantic comedies are hard to come by but with Judd Apatow as producer and a great cast, The Big Sick could just be a worthy contribution to the genre.
After a somewhat awkward first night together, Kumail (Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani, who also co-wrote The Big Sick) starts to date Emily (Zoe Kazan – Ruby Sparks), but eventually has to break up with her because his family insists that he has an arranged marriage.
Emily becomes sick and Kumail begins to visit her parents, Beth and Terry, increasingly questioning why he ever let Emily go.
Beth and Terry are played by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano, respectively. From the trailer, it looks genuinely touching as well as laugh-out-loud funny, plus it got a positive reception at Sundance recently.
