'Late Afternoon' was nominated for Best Animated Short
'Late Afternoon' was written and directed by Cartoon Saloon's Louise Bagnall.
Carton Saloon is the Kilkenny-based animation studio behind Oscar-nominated animated features 'The Secret of Kells', 'Song of the Sea' and 'The Breadwinner'.
The film is 9 minutes long and in a hand-drawn, digitally animated format. It follows Emily (Fionnula Flanagan), an elderly woman who journeys into her past. It thus provides a poignant examination of identity and memory loss.
'Late Afternoon' competes against 'Animal Behaviour', 'Bao', 'One Small Step' and 'Weekends' at the Oscars this year.
Another Irish short that has been nominated for this year's Academy Awards is 'Detainment'.
Based on the true story of James Bulger, it competes for the Best Live-Action Short Oscar.
The movie is not currently available in full online. However, you can watch the trailer and three scenes from it below.
