Two films in, Damien Chazelle is already looking like he's going to be one of the most fascinating directors working today.
Following up a tense, nail-biting thriller like Whiplash with a beautifully-laden musical drama about '60s Los Angeles might seem like a huge jump, but for Chazelle, it's working. La La Land pairs Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as two struggling dreamers in Los Angeles. Gosling is a jazz pianist whilst Stone plays a working actor, both of whom are trying their best to make it to the top of their profession.
The music, which is written by Chazelle, will be performed wholly by the actors. The trailer, seen below, shows Gosling's piano and singing skills and the beautiful cinematography that Chazelle's working with.
Take a look.
At the very least, this is going to clean up in the musical categories. It's entirely possible that we could see Gosling get a nomination here and the fact that it's being released around December is a big nod towards a heavy Oscar campaign for it.
Either way, it looks interesting to say the least. No Irish release date has been confirmed as of writing, but expect it to be some time around January 2017.
