Although JJ Abrams is busy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he's still had time to keep an eye on that other franchise, Star Trek.
Judging by this first trailer for the third installment, his fingerprints are still all over the place. Jarring music? Check. Lens flare? Check. Sardonic humour? Check.
Simon Pegg has been pretty open about the fact that Beyond will be more in line with the original series than the previous two entries; focusing more on the exploration aspect than the recognisable characters and so on.
From what we can gather from the trailer, it looks like Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhuru and Scotty are stranded on a remote planet and have try make their way back to the Enterprise.
Idris Elba, we're pretty sure, is that spikey-face guy who turns up for a split-second over his voice-over and we're also noting a few other little nods along the way.
In the meantime, here's the trailer itself.
So, thoughts? It's hard to tell what a film is from this kind of sizzle reel. We're not getting a feel for the story, we just know it's going to be pretty crazy. As to whether Simon Pegg's made a decent stab at the script, again, no idea.
It does look like it's following the same tack as the previous films - lots of explosions, lots of lens flare, lots of stunts and action. Who knows, basically.
Star Trek Beyond is scheduled for release in 2016.
