Huge star in America, but unknown quantity on these shores, Tyler Perry is set to star in I, Alex Cross, a reboot of the flicks that were based on James Patterson's 'Cross' novels, which previously starred Morgan Freeman.

Deadline.com broke the story that Perry, who has written, directed and starred in all of his own films, would be taking the highly sought after part. Idris Elba was formerly thought to be headlining the proposed new series of films, with David Twohy (Pitch Black, A Perfect Getaway) directing. That was a mildly intriguing prospect, given some of the stellar work both men have done before. Now, Rob "I've made one good film" Cohen is looking likely to call the shots.

I know nothing about Perry, but Cohen is not a director who installs a level of confidence in any production. With the exception of The Fast and The Furious he's never directed a particularly good film, but has a mouth like a foghorn when it comes to talking up his own productions. Still, he produced The Monster Squad. For that I will be eternally grateful.
