We've been tracking the story of Danny Boyle's return to the depraved world of Trainspotting for quite some time and now, at long last, we've got something concrete and official.
Sony / TriStar have signed on to release the follow-up to the 1996 modern classic with all members of the original cast - that's Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner, Kelly MacDonald and Jonny Lee Miller - all officially signed on to return.
It appears that Miller was the hold-out, not for money, but due to his heavy shooting schedule with TV series Elementary. However, the word is is that the Trainspotting sequel during the show's hiatus, freeing up Jonny Lee Miller to return as Sick Boy.
Meanwhile, John Hodges, who adapted Irvine Welsh's screenplay, has handed in his script, with Robert Carlyle remarking that it's "the best f***ing script I've ever read." Sony / TriStar are aiming to have the as-yet untitled Trainspotting sequel released for the film's 21st anniversary in 2017, with filming due to start shortly.
As for what the film will be about is anyone's guess. Irvine Welsh did write a sequel to Trainspotting that focused on the same characters as they joined the pornography business, however it's not yet known if screenwriter John Hodges is working off that novel or something entirely different.
In the meantime, let's all remember the Worst Toilet In Scotland over our afternoon tea.
