They came to the right decision
Tom Hanks, star of 'Forrest Gump', has revealed that there were very short discussions regarding a sequel to the 1994 flick before it was dismissed.
Speaking on 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Hanks said, "I will say that, with a long time in between, we did take a stab at talking about another 'Forrest Gump' that lasted all of 40 minutes. And then we never…we said, 'Guys, come on.'"
The Oscar-winning drama was based on the 1986 novel of the same name, leading to the 1995 book sequel 'Gump and Co.'
The film adaptation of the first book was a box office smash, earning $678 million worldwide. It became the top-grossing film in the U.S. in 1994.
Luckily for us, we're safe in the knowledge a sequel was quickly chucked off the table. We're happy with just the one 'Forrest Gump' thank you very much. That is until we inevitably get the announcement some time in the next decade of 'GUMP JR' starring Haley Joel Osment.
"A smart thing I did is I’ve never signed a contract that had a contractual obligation to a sequel," Hanks continued. "I’ve always said, 'Guys, if there’s a reason to do it, let’s do it. But you guys can’t force me'. There is that natural inclination that is one of pure commerce that says, 'Hey, you just had a hit, so do it again and you’ll have a hit.'"
Hanks stars as Geppetto is the new live-action version of 'Pinocchio'. The film is also directed by 'Forrest Gump' director Robert Zemeckis. The two have previously teamed up for films such as 'Cast Away' and 'The Polar Express'.
'Pinocchio' is available to stream on Disney+ now.
