The cast features our own Colm Meaney

If you're a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's series set in middle-earth, then listen up.

A biopic about the great 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' author J.R.R. Tolkien has finally released a lot of details about the upcoming movie.

The movie is set to star Nicholas Hoult (Beast in the current 'X-Men' incarnation), Lily Collins (Netflix's 'Okja'), and Craig Roberts ('Submarine').

However, there has also been a hell of a lot of Irish talent cast in 'Tolkien' too.  Our national treasure Colm Meaney ('The Snapper'), as well as Patrick Gibson ('The OA'), Genevieve O’Reilly ('Rogue One') and Northern Irish actors Laura Donnelly ('Beowolf') and Anthony Boyle ('Derry Girls'). Phew, that's one strong Irish cast.

Not only that, but the movie also features some behind-the-scenes Irish talent too. Limerick-born David Gleeson helped write the script; Gleeson has previously written and directed 'Don't Go' last year, which starred Simon Delaney. Stephen Beresford also helped write the script, with Dome Karukoski ('Tom of Finland') as director.

The official synopsis of 'Tolkien' is as follows:

'Tolkien' explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “Fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels.

'Tolkien' is due for release on May 10th, and we can expect a trailer to arrive very soon.
