Speedy Gonzales is the latest character from your childhood that is about to be rebooted for the big screen.

Thankfully though it will be an animated movie rather than some live action abomination that doesn't even bear thinking about. Warner Bros. are the studio that are currently developing the project with Are We There Yet? screenwriter Hank Nelken on scripting duties.

Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez will have the honour of voicing the iconic mouse. Derbez told Deadline that he's perfect for the role because not only is he Mexican, but his full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzales and he also has point ears.

Speedy Gonzales is a divisive figure with some labeling the character racist while others proclaim him as a Mexican hero. Derbez firmly falls into the latter category.

“He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa.”
