The as-yet untitled novel will be set 64 years before the events of the novels and movies.
Although some might immediately dismiss 'Hunger Games' as a rip-off of 'Battle Royale', there was quite a bit more going on than just teenagers murdering one another.
Granted, it was the central crux of the first novel and tied it altogether - but there was a wider world beyond it. Now, a new prequel series written by Suzanne Collins will explore it in greater detail. The as-yet untitled novel will be set 10 years before the events of 'Hunger Games' and follow the failed rebellion in Panem that eventually led to the Hunger Games themselves.
As it stands, no movie has been officially announced, but given how Lionsgate had the movie rights to the original novels, it seems pretty obvious that one is coming. Along with 'Rust and Bone', Jennifer Lawrence's career was launched by 'Hunger Games', so it's clearly a hot property.
In a statement to AP, Lionsgate said that they have "been communicating with (Suzanne Collins) during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie," but stopped short of officially announcing the movie.
'The Hunger Games' franchise earned well over $1 billion at the box office, and was hugely successful both in the US and overseas, whilst the novels sold over 65 million copies in the US alone and were translated into over 50 languages.
