Turns out the classic girls night in movie had an alternate ending that we never saw.
The film’s co-writers Karen McCullah and Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly in which they detailed the ending that was first proposed.
McCullah explained that the original ending went something like this-
"Originally it ended at the courthouse right after the trial. Everyone was congratulating Elle, and Emmett came up and gave her a big kiss. Then there was a tag where it was a year in the future and she and Vivian, who was now blond, had started the Blonde Legal Defense Fund and they were in the quad handing out pamphlets," she said.
Something about that conclusion seems a bit weak to us and the test audience agreed.
"The test-screening audience didn't feel like it was an exciting enough ending for her, success-wise. The kiss made it seem like it was a rom-com," McCullah said.
"They knew that this was not a movie about a girl getting a guy," added Smith.
So the crew flew to London where Witherspoon had already started her next job, The Importance of Being Earnest, and re-shot the graduation scene. And it turns out Luke Wilson had already cut his hair for The Royal Tenenbaums and had to wear a wig. Now you know.
Here’s the ending from the movie to refresh your memory. We think they made the right choice.
