David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are taking the lead after 'The Rise of Skywalker'
After 'The Rise of Skywalker', the next 'Star Wars' movie to hit cinemas comes from 'Game of Thrones' creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The news has just been confirmed by Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger.
News that the 'Game of Thrones' creators were working on a 'Star Wars' series first came out earlier this year.
Disney said that Weiss and Benioff’s films would be separate from the classic Skywalker Saga and Rian Johnson’s new trilogy.
Iger made the announcement at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit:
“[We thought] it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what’s next. Now, we’re not going to wait until ['The Rise of Skywalker'] is released and start figuring it out, we’re actually hard at work doing that already. The conclusion that we reached was that three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to really gear up for the next film’s release.”
The first of the new series will be written and produced by Weiss and Benioff. It is set to open on December 16, 2022.
It is the next 'Star Wars' movie to hit cinemas after 'The Rise of Skywalker'. 'Episode IX' is released on December 20, 2019.
Two additional 'Star Wars' movies hit cinemas in December 2024 and 2026. At this point, it is unclear whether the 2024 and 2026 movies will be entries in Benioff and Weiss’ series. Moreover, whether the movies are a trilogy or a set of standalones is also unclear.
Currently in the works are 'Star Wars' TV series 'The Mandalorian', debuting in November with Disney+, and a 'Rogue One' prequel series starring Diego Luna.
