The threshold will likely be surpassed this weekend.
It’ll come as no surprise to anyone that the Rian Johnson directed blockbuster is coining it, but the sheer scale of the numbers involved are staggering. At the time of writing The Last Jedi has pulled in over $934 million, with a near even split between U.S and overseas market, in just two weeks.
The excellent financial performance of The Last Jedi has also helped the Star Wars franchise to pass another milestone.
The three Star Wars titles released since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.06 billion, have now generated over $4 billion dollars in ticket sales at the worldwide box office.
While this figure doesn’t include the huge production and marketing costs related with these movies, it is still an interesting indicator of just how lucrative the franchise is.
In December 2015 J.J. Abram’s The Force Awakens pulled in over $2 billion globally with Gareth Edwards’ standalone Rogue One taking in close to $1 billion. It’s projected that The Last Jedi will ultimately gross somewhere in between the two.
Now, how do we get involved with the next one?
