The Dark Knight has made history by breaking Spiderman 3’s opening weekend record, coining a staggering $155.4 million at the North American box office according to estimates (it could rise or fall slightly when final numbers are announced). Spidey opened last year to $151 million, beating previous record holder Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest. Mamma Mia also broke a record of its own, as it bowed with the biggest ever gross for a musical, $27.6 million. The overall box office was the highest it has ever been as all grosses combined came to $250 million - making it the largest grossing weekend of all time. Good Christ that’s a lot of records; but if any film this year deserved the plaudits and financial rewards it’s The Dark Knight, as it’s a truly stunning film. It opens here on Thursday, and should see similar success.
