Arriving in cinemas this December
Since the first teaser was released in April, there has not been much talk about the upcoming musical remake. However, now that we're just three months out from its release, we have the official trailer.
Steven Spielberg's 'West Side Story' has its first official trailer, showing off a more in-depth look at Rachel Zegler as Maria and Ansel Elgort as her troubled love interest, Tony.
The star-crossed lovers will be the centre point of Spielberg's first-ever time taking over the 74-year-old director's chair for a musical film. Based on the 1961 movie, which itself is inspired by Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', the musical sees the two teenagers fall in love, despite their feuding families.
Due to the success of the original - which had 10 Oscar wins - and because of its cult status, anticipation for Spielberg's take is certainly high. For the project, he has once again teamed up with his frequent collaborator and screenwriter Tony Kushner, who earned screenwriting Oscar nominations for 'Munich' and 'Lincoln', both of which are also directed by Spielberg.
Joining Zegler and Elgort for the musical are Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James, and Rita Moreno who played Anita in the original '60's film.
The official synopsis of the film is as follows: 'West Side Story’ tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno — one of only three artists to be honored with Academy, Emmy, GRAMMY, Tony, and Peabody Awards – also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.
Here's the official trailer for what will be the musical of winter 2021.
'West Side Story' arrives in cinemas on December 10.
