Arguably the greatest mixed-animation film since Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Space Jam has gone on to cult status in the interim.
A lot of that is down to Michael Jordan's powerful performance as, uh, Michael Jordan and the fact that Bill Murray just randomly turned up during the film. Whatever the reason is, a sequel to Space Jam has been mooted for many years. However, at long last, there's finally official word that Space Jam 2 is happening and what's more, it's already at a pretty advanced stage.
It's understood that Justin Lin is in final talks to sign on as director with screenwriter Andrew Dodge is already working on the script. Justin Lin is currently an in-demand director, having already completed filming for Star Trek Beyond and was responsible for reviving the fortunes of the Fast & Furious franchise.
He also directed the opening of True Detective's spotty second season and has been heavily rumoured to be one of the main choices to take on a future DC Cinematic Universe film. Dodge, meanwhile, is something of a novice whose only produced script to date is the little-seen Jason Bateman comedy, Bad Words.
LeBron James, meanwhile, has already turned up in Judd Apatow's Trainwreck as, well, himself and was something of a scene-stealer in that. He's also got a lot of personal charisma and charm, which will go a long way to making Space Jam 2 as successful as the original. We're obviously assuming that Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd and so forth are already signed on the dotted line, so nothing to worry about there.
Let's just hope they've got a cracking soundtrack for it, or at the very least, bring R. Kelly back for another song.
