Everyone's favourite blue hedgehog isn't going anywhere
After the first film was one of the best performing features of 2020 (there was a pandemic, sure, but that's what the numbers say), Paramount is investing further in Sonic the Hedgehog.
In case you missed it, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' hits cinemas later this year.
Fans haven't even seen it yet but a threequel has already gotten the green light.
The news was announced at the Viacom Investors Event (via Deadline).
It was also revealed that Sega and Paramount+ are developing the first-ever original live-action 'Sonic' series, which will launch in 2023.
It will feature the character Knuckles, and Idris Elba is returning to voice the character after his debut in the movie sequel.
Sega CEO Haruki Satomi said: "We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed.
"We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' franchise with them."
Aside from Elba, Ben Schwartz returns to voice the titular hero in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'.
Also returning are James Marsden and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Colleen O'Shaughnessey joins the cast to voice Tails.
The sequel races into cinemas on 1st April, 2022.
