"If it is a network show, it’s not my 'Cruel Intentions'."
Sarah Michelle Gellar may be back on our screens this September, appearing on Netflix's newest teen dramedy, but in a recent interview with The New York Times, she's taking a look back at a time when her '90s hit 'Cruel Intentions' was on the cusp of getting reboot on network television. It was a move, however, that she's glad never came to fruition.
The film starring Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson and more proved to be so popular that it ended up spawning a prequel, a sequel and a musical of all things - but none came close to the sheer sexual magnitude of the original. In 2016, however, a reboot TV series was in the works, all of which was inspired by the 1782 French novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses'.
The 'Cruel Intentions' reboot was set to take place 15 years after the 1999 film and would follow Gellar's character Kathryn Merteuil and the son of her late brother, Bash Casey. After discovering his late father’s hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption.
None of this seemed like a worthy reason to make a 'Cruel Intentions' sequel/reboot series to Gellar. She told The New York Times. "That was a whole crazy time. Nothing against NBC, but 'Cruel Intentions' is straight streaming.
"On the first day, I was like, 'This isn’t working.' It’s just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it’s not my 'Cruel Intentions'. So, I was actually grateful."
IMDb TV is reportedly reworking 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' for a new series based in the political world of Washington D.C. Neal H. Moritz, who produced 'Cruel Intentions', is on board the project.
Catch Sarah Michelle Gellar in Netflix's 'Do Revenge' as the no-bullshit headmaster of a prestigious high school where 'Stranger Things' alum Maya Hawke and 'Riverdale' star Camila Mendes attempt to get revenge on their teenage tormentors.
Watch 'Cruel Intentions' on Prime Video, and 'Do Revenge' on Netflix.
