'1917' is now more likely than ever to win out in the Best Picture and Best Director category.

Sam Mendes picked up the award for Best Feature Film at last night's Directors Guild Awards, placing him well out in front for the Best Director gong at the Oscars in a couple of weeks' time.

Mendes was pitted against the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon Ho, Martin Scorsese and Taika Waititi for Best Feature Film, but won out for '1917'.

The DGAs are one of the most accurate identifiers of Best Director in the Oscars, having only missed it seven times since the DGAs began in 1948. To put that in percentages, the DGAs have an accuracy of 90.28% for predicting Best Director at the Oscars.

In the TV categories, HBO won out in most of the major awards. Bill Hader won Best Comedy Series for 'Barry', while Nicole Kassell and 'Watchmen' won for Best Dramatic Series. Johan Renck and 'Chernobyl', meanwhile, won Best TV Movie / Miniseries.

As it stands, '1917' has picked up the Producers Guild Award, a good indicator for Best Picture, and now this for Best Director, with Joaquin Phoenix and Reneé Zellwegger winning in the SAGs for Best Actor and Best Actress. You can be all but certain that this is how they're going to play out come Oscar night.
