Ouch
Quentin Tarantino wants you to know he won't be directing any superhero movies any time soon.
In an LA Times interview, the 'Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood' director made the comparison between superhero movies of today and movie musicals during the 1960's falling out of favour.
Tarantino said that today’s filmmakers "can’t wait for the day they can say that about superhero movies. The analogy works because it’s a similar chokehold."
However, according to the director, "the writing’s not quite on the wall yet. The way it was in 1969 when it was, 'Oh, my God, we just put a bunch of money into things that nobody gives a damn about anymore.’"
Asked why he never dipped his toes into the Marvel or DC pool over the years, Tarantino responded by saying, "You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job."
Interestingly enough, Tarantino seems to actually quite like superhero films despite his most recent comments. In 2019, he said, "I started catching up with some of the Marvel movies so I could go see ‘Endgame’.
"I just finished ‘Captain America: Civil War’, so next up is ‘Doctor Strange.’ Actually, the last one I saw was ‘Ragnarok.’ I loved it. It was my favourite one of the series since ‘The Avengers’ – drastically my favourite."
So you may not see Tarantino behind the camera of a Marvel flick any time soon. But you might well see him in the front row of 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'.
