Tickets to see Star Wars: Episode VII will be in every Star Wars fan's Christmas stocking in a couple of years time - the most buzzed about film is to be released in December 2015.

Yesterday Lucasfilm and Disney announced that the film will open on December 18th in the US and given its global popularity a release this side of the pond is likely to be around the same time.

Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn said, "We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture."

The hugely anticipated flick will be directed by sci-fi wonderman J.J. Abrams who is about to re-write the script with one of the The Empire Strikes Back writers Lawrence Kasdan. So that's good news, that was the best one, so some people say. (Beg to differ? Leave your comments below.)

Until then, I hope you're practicing your best light-sabre moves; the open auditions for two lead roles will be held in Dublin in no time!
