The original director and cast are on board
It is one of the most beloved cult films of the 1990s, and certainly one of the best-known Australian films ever.
'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' saw actors Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp playing drag queens who take a long journey through the Australian outback in their run-down bus - aka Priscilla - learning lots about each other and themselves in the process.
Now, 30 years after the film was released - and following a successful stage musical adaptation - a sequel is finally in the works, according to its director Stephan Elliott.
What's more, the main cast are all set to return in their roles.
Elliott told Deadline: "I'm not repeating myself, we'll start the new film in Australia, but by God, we're going on one helluva journey. The original cast is on board, I've got a script that everybody likes, we're still working out deals. … It's happening."
The original film sees Weaving's character Tick, who is a drag queen, take up an offer to perform a residency in a casino in Alice Springs run by his ex-wife.
He enlists his fellow queens Adam (Pearce) and Bernadette (Stamp) for the performance and they encounter
The film was roundly praised for its LGBT+ themes at the time, including the fact that Stamp's character Bernadette is a trans woman in the film.
Elliott said that he had considered a sequel many times over the years, but the death of his parents spurred him on to get the ball moving on it.
"I thought, what am I going to do? Stick them on a cruise ship, stick them on a train? You name it, over the years I've been pitched Priscilla 2 in spades.
"I was writing and configuring after dad died in early 2020. Then mum died in early 2023. It was a tough one, and so I finally realised that I do have something to write about."
The bus itself, which was found in 2019 after being lost for 25 years, will also be restored and will feature in the sequel.
