Love or hate the idea, the fact is that the live-action remake of Aladdin is now officially in production as evidenced by this post by Will Smith.
Smith is set to play the genie of the lamp, a role made famous by Robin Williams in the original, and will be joined by Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar.
Take a look.
The film has already come under fire, however, for the casting of Billy Magnussen in a brand-new role written for the film. Some fans have complained that Magnussen's role in the film is tantamount to whitewashing, as the role he's playing - Prince Anders - wasn't in the original. Neither Guy Ritchie or Disney have released comments so far on Magnussen's casting.
Aladdin is set for a late 2018 release.
