Just as word came out that Hancock 2 was a go, with Will Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron all signed on to return, it's director Peter Berg has committed to another project that is due to shoot first. The Friday Night Lights and Very Bad Things helmer will direct Battleships, which he says is "a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle". Berg is a director cut very much from a similar ilk as his mentor, Michael Mann. Now, with the exception of Friday Night Lights I don't think he's quite reached that level yet, but there are genuine flashes of brilliance in his work. Hancock, which I enjoyed, needed a villain to be really good, while The Kingdom melded visceral action and subtle character exploration extremely well for the most part. He's apparently a Navy buff, so this could be a lot of fun. Also, Twilight star Robert Pattinson was seen having a meeting with him recently... will he play a sailor?
