If Daniel Day-Lewis follows through on his acting retirement plans, then Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread will be his final film.
While Phantom Thread will be final outing for Day-Lewis it will be a first for Paul Thomas Anderson as he is reported to be serving as his own cinematographer for the first time in his career.
Anderson's regular DP Robert Elswit is otherwise occupied with Dan Gilroy's new film, so the auteur has decided to shoot the film himself. Elswit previously worked with PTA on Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood, winning an Oscar for his work on the latter film.
Anderson has reportedly been keen on shooting a film himself for some time. He's operated the camera himself for some shots in his previous films and more recently shot the videos for Radiohead's Present Tense and Daydreaming.
PTA is hardly the first director to shoot his own films. Steven Soderbergh is known for acting as his own DP while the likes of Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch have also shot scenes here and there.
