It was probably no surprise to anyone that Daniel Day-Lewis walked away with his third Oscar for Best Actor last night, making history in the process. Sure isn't he the first man ever to pick the gong up three times?
The Academy loved him in My Left Foot, first handing him the award for Best Actor back in 1989 and then it all went a bit quiet on the Day-Lewis Oscars front for a while after that. He was nominated for Last Of The Mohicans, In The Name of the Father and Gangs of New York, but on each occasion he was pipped to the post. Then, in 2007, he struck oil and luck, nabbing the gong for a second time for There Will Be Blood.
They say it was a forgone conclusion that wee Daniel would take home the little gold man for Lincoln. Sure didn't he win every other award along the way? Nevertheless, he was clearly still shocked and delighted: "I really don't know how any of this happened," he said. "I do know that I have received so much more than my fair share of good fortune in my life, and I am so grateful to the Academy for this beautiful honour."
There won't be a cow milked in Wicklow tonight...
Three Reasons Daniel Day-Lewis is a bit of ledgebag in the eyes of the Academy
3. He was awesome as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood...
2. He brought America's favourite (arguably) President to the big screen in Lincoln...
1. Christy Brown. We'll say no more...
