'The Banshees of Inisherin' sadly goes home empty-handed, but a few Irish wins took place during the night.
The long-predicted sweep for 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' took place last night at the Oscars, where it took home an incredible seven Oscars - including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director for the Daniels, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis respectively.
In one of the standout speeches of the night, Ke Huy Quan tearfully thanked his immigrant parents and recounted how his story in the US began in a refugee camp and culminated on stage at the Oscars. Jamie Lee Curtis, meanwhile, called out to her actor parents - Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, both of whom were previous nominees - in her speech.
Michelle Yeoh made history on the night and became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress, and only the second woman of colour to win the award. Yeoh received her Oscar from the first woman of colour to win the award, Halle Berry, who won for 'Monster' over ten years ago.
'The Banshees of Inisherin' went home empty-handed, with bookies' favourite Kerry Condon losing out to Curtis and Barry Keoghan losing out to Huy Quan. Likewise, first-time nominee Colin Farrell lost out in the Best Actor category to Brendan Fraser for 'The Whale', as did fellow Irishman and first-time nominee Paul Mescal for 'Aftersun'.
However, it wasn't all bad news for the Irish at the Oscars. While 'An Cailín Ciúin' lost out to the expected winner 'All Quiet on the Western Front', Ireland's nominees scored wins elsewhere. In one of the night's highlights, the Best Live-Action Short category was won by 'An Irish Goodbye'. Directors Tom Berkley and Ross White used their speech to lead the entire audience of Hollywood A-listers in singing Happy Birthday to the short's lead, James Martin. Richard Baneham, an alum of Ballyfermot College and native of Tallaght, picked up his second Oscar for Best Visual Effects as the VFX Supervisor for 'Avatar: The Way of Water'.
