The rumour mill has been set in motion again as Oscar Isaac has been linked to the DC project ‘The Batman.’ According to GWW, the actor recently met with Warner Bros to discuss him taking on "an undisclosed role" in the Matt Reeves-directed superhero movie. They reported that: “an offer hasn’t been made but there is talk that Oscar is very interested in being part of the movie.”
Ben Affleck has notoriously been going back and forth on the extent of his involvement in the project – at one point, he was even going to direct the film, but now it seems his only credit will be as producer.
Now that he has reportedly checked into rehab, some are speculating that Isaac, who is currently shooting ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’, could be taking over as the Caped Crusader.
Alternatively, Isaac may be being courted to play the movie’s supervillain, being no stranger to antagonistic, creepy roles in the likes of ‘Ex Machina’, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Annihilation.’
It’s been heavily talked about that Oswald Cobblepott/The Penguin will be the villain of ‘The Batman’, so that role could easily be the one Isaac is in talks for. The character was previously played by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton's 'Batman Returns' and more recently featured in the TV series 'Gotham'.
With the film's placement in the DCEU being up in the air, ‘The Batman’ could be a prequel, which would allow Reeves to recast Isaac in a role that has already been seen in the extended superhero canon of movies – or he could be playing a young Bruce Wayne.
It’s worth noting that the film is still in the scripting phase and only due to commence production next year. Fans shouldn’t expect it to arrive in cinemas any earlier than 2020.
