If you love crazy Nicolas Cage – and looking across his filmography, it’s not exactly an uncommon sight – you’ll probably want to watch the trailer for ‘Mandy’, even if the film proves a little too weird for watching in full.
Directed and written by ‘Beyond the Black Rainbow’ filmmaker Panos Cosmatos, the film sees Cage and Andrea Riseborough play a devoted couple called Red and Mandy whose quiet existence in the woods is destroyed when a satanic cult and its maniacal leader, played by Linus Roache, come to town on a mission – to possess Mandy’s body and soul.
According to the film’s official synopsis, “A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiralling, surreal, bloody rampage of all out, mind-altering vengeance.”
At one amazing point in the trailer, Nic Cage tells Bill Duke’s character (yes, as in 80s action movie star Bill Duke who played Mac in Predator and Cooke in Commando – THAT Bill Duke) that he is going hunting. When asked by Duke “so whatcha hunting?” he answers, “Crazy evil!”
Another plus is that the film, according to the trailer, sees Cage give ‘the performance of a lifetime’ so, you know, it’s one of the good Nic Cage movies.
By the end of the trailer, there’s a lot of blood and there are chainsaws being wielded so that says it all, really.
The film has been getting rave reviews on being shown at Sundance but it’s weird and extremely violent so it might prove more of an indie darling than a mainstream hit.
‘Mandy’ will open on September 14 in select theatres and on VOD. If it looks like we’re getting a release here in Ireland, we will of course keep you informed.
