You'll want to check out at least one if not a couple of these
If you're planning a trip to the cinemas this weekend, there are plenty of new movies to see.
The Clint Eastwood-helmed biopic 'Richard Jewell', psychological horror 'The Lighthouse' and Tom Hanks starrer 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood' are among the latest releases. Spanning drama, horror, comedy and action, all the following are in cinemas from today and there's definitely something for everyone.
The Lighthouse
Our top pick of the week is 'The Lighthouse' which movies editor Brian Lloyd awarded a 5/5 star review. It follows two lighthouse keepers, one more seasoned (Willem Dafoe), one newbie (Robert Pattinson), as they get stranded on the island they're stationed at during a storm. Gradually, their grip on reality breaks down.
It's a stunning film shot in black-and-white with imagery that'll haunt you long after the movie ends. It's certainly a cinephile's kind of movie, but not for the faint of heart as scenes of animal cruelty, masturbation and mermaid sex are frequent. We promise, we're not kidding.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood
If you're looking for something lighter, we also recommend 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood'. Based on a true story, it follows the relationship between journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) and TV icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) as the former interviews the latter.
It's feel-good and hopeful, and much deeper than you'd expect. It gets to the core of what it means to be human in a way few other movies accomplish. It looks at tough subjects like mental health, bereavement and strained family relationships. Plus the performances from Rhys and Hanks are just fantastic.

Richard Jewell
In 'The 15:17 to Paris' and 'Sully', Clint Eastwood demonstrated his drive to bring the stories of everyday Americans doing extraordinary acts to the big screen. Now he does the same in 'Richard Jewell'. Our titular hero was working as a security guard during the 1996 Summer Olympics where he discovers a bomb. His discovery saves the lives of many, but Jewell was subsequently vilified by the media when he became the FBI's primary suspect for planting the bomb.
Eastwood can be a little simplistic in his approach to the story. But it packs a fabulous cast between lead Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde. And you can't disparage an uplifting movie where we root for the little guy too much.

The Rhythm Section
If you're in the mood for something with a bit more action, 'The Rhythm Section' is just the ticket. Blake Lively plays a woman seeking revenge after discovering that the plane crash which killed her family was no accident.
Sterling K. Brown and Jude Law co-star, and it is directed by Reed Morano who worked on 'The Handmaid's Tale'. Expect tones of '007' and 'Atomic Blonde', and watch out for sequences shot right here in Dublin.

Also in cinemas
And there's still more to see in movie theatres from today. Another new movie out is 'Queen & Slim' starring Daniel Kaluuya of 'Get Out' fame. He plays a young man who, after a Tinder date, ends up killing a police officer in self defense after the couple are pulled over. They have no choice but to go on the run.
Getting a more limited release is 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote', a movie over twenty years in the making. Terry Gilliam directs Adam Driver and Jonathon Pryce, who play a disillusioned film director and titular Spanish cobbler who believes he is the real Don Quixote.
With Gilliam having been a member of Monty Python, and director of such films as 'Brazil', 'Twelves Monkeys' and 'The Zero Theorem', you can expect this to be similarly quirky and surrealist in its sense of humour.
