Goodbye, Sidney
Neve Campbell reprised her role as Sidney Prescott in 'Scream' earlier this year, but the star won't be returning for the 6th installment.
A statement published by the star on Monday read "sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film."
"As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream."
"I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."
The statement added "It’s been a very difficult decision to move on," and said "To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."
Campbell shot to fame after appearing in the 1996 original, later reprising her role in the 4 subsequent sequels, including this year's hit entry.
The most recent 'Scream' film touches upon the trend of legacy sequels, and Campbell plays a large part in the film's explosive finale.
The film leaves a path open for Campbell's character to return, but with a sequel due out on March 31st next year, it will take a late intervention for a u-turn to take place.
Series veteran Courtney Cox will be returning for the sequel, with 'Scream 4' alum Hayden Panettiere also back in the saddle.
Acclaimed character actor and veritable "I know that guy" actor Dermot Mulroney has been added to the cast of the-as-yet-untitled 6th 'Scream' film, which will see Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy and Mason Gooding returning.
The film will have the same writers and directors as the 2022 film, with the 'Radio Silence' collective made up of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and writer Guy Busick serving as the main creative personnel.
Campbell has been tapped to star in a TV adaptation of the cult game series 'Twisted Metal' alongside Anthony Mackie, Will Arnett, Stephanie Beatriz and Thomas Haden Church.
If this is indeed Campbell's departure from the 'Scream' series, it will be the end of a run for the iconic Sidney Prescott who has had to see off 5 different versions of Ghostface in her storied life, but with the most recent film establishing her as someone who is married with children, perhaps it is time for someone else to take up the mantle.
