In many ways, we're surprised that this film hasn't been adapted for the stage already - but a Broadway musical of 'Mrs. Doubtfire' is on the way.
The 1993 film - which itself was an adaptation of Anne Fine's novel 'Alias Madame Doubtfire' - will get the Broadway treatment by director Jerry Zaks, who most recently directed the Tony-winning 'Hello, Dolly!' with Bette Midler on Broadway. It'll be written by the creators of 'Something Rotten!', with the book by John O'Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick and music/lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick.
The production was first rumoured for a Broadway adaptation in 2015, but a whole new creative team has been drafted in for this production, with producers saying: “Mrs. Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving. Getting this team together and crafting Mrs. Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can’t wait to get into production.”
It's hard to imagine who might possibly take on the role made famous by the late Robin Williams, but casting and a production schedule are expected to be announced down the line.
