You'd have to imagine that Mary Poppins Returns, the long-awaited sequel to the 1964 musical classic, is going to have a lot of Oscar traction.
For a start, the original won five Oscars - including one for Dame Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins herself. It's also got Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame in the cast and, undoubtedly, providing music for it and now, it's going to have Meryl Streep in an as-yet unspecified role.
Variety reports that Streep, who won three Oscars herself, is final negotiations to join Emily Blunt and Miranda in Mary Poppins Returns. Blunt will play Poppins whilst Miranda will play Jack, a street lamplighter that's probably not a million miles away from Dick Van Dyke's Bert. No details have been released about who Streep will be playing, however the story does centre around the two grown-up children, Jane and Michael Banks, who are now dealing with a personal loss.
Mary Poppins returns and helps Jane and Michael, along with Michael's own children, to "help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives."
Mary Poppins Returns will land in Irish cinemas on December 25th, 2018.
