Although we most often associate Martin Scorsese with sprawling sagas about crime in America or Leonardo DiCaprio snorting cocaine out of a woman's rear-end, he has turned his hand to much more in-depth fare.

The brilliant Last Temptation of Christ, for example, was a fascinating look at a religious figure and the actual psychological impact being that person would have on someone. His latest film, Silence, focuses on two Jesuit priests who face violent persecution in feudal Japan.

It's been reported that Scorsese is close to signing on to direct a gritty biopic on the life and times of George Washington, one of the founding fathers of the United States. It's understood that Requiem For A Dream director Darren Aronofsky was originally attached to the script, which he compared to Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven.

Meanwhile, Scorsese has a number of things lined up whilst he puts the finishing touches to Silence. The long-mooted reunion with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, I Heard You Paint Houses, is also in the works whilst his biopic of America's first serial killer, HH Holmes, is also said to be another possibility.

Frequent collaborator Leonard DiCaprio is rumoured to be playing the role of Holmes, whose life and crimes were covered in the bestselling novel, Devil In The White City.

Silence is slated for an Oscar-friendly November 2016 release date.
