Riding a wave of positive reviews from just about every critic and outlet, Logan ripped into the US box office and came back with a total victory.

The figures are still coming in, however the early data has it that Logan managed to clear close to $80 million on its opening weekend, making $33 million on the Friday opening alone. As Logan is an R-rated film, it means that audience figures are definitely restricted - however, this caveat hasn't stopped audiences turning out for Hugh Jackman's final performance in the role.

No figures are available as of yet for its Irish take - they won't come in until Tuesday at the earliest - but analysts are predicting that Logan could easily clear $100 million on its opening weekend globally.

Logan already has the honour of being the widest released R-rated film in US cinema history, and it appears the gamble for Fox is paying off already. Looking ahead, it's clear that studios are sitting up and taking notice of the fact that more adult-themed and thought-provoking blockbusters and superhero-themed films can make money and that they're no longer a risk.

Deadpool managed to become one of the top-grossing films of 2016, enjoyed the largest opening weekend for the winter months at the US box office and became a cultural hit with audiences as well - all with an R-rating.

Logan is currently in Irish cinemas and is rated 16.
