Gaga revealed she experienced disassociation while in character

The singer and actress says that she was in character as the Italian socialite for nine months.

Actors go to various lengths in order to achieve what they require from a performance. Some, like Christian Bale or Charlize Theron, have changed their appearance wildly in order to play their roles. Others, like Daniel Day-Lewis, fully immerse themselves in the character they're playing.

While it may be slightly less of task to play a woman who forced her way into fashion's most iconic family, as opposed to Abraham Lincoln, it's still no less a feat for Gaga to have thrust herself into such a demanding role. This is especially true when you consider it's only her third feature film.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the star shed some light onto the process behind her upcoming performance as Reggiani.

"When I say that I didn’t break character, some of it was not by choice". Gaga claims she entered a dissociative state while staying in character.

"I was falling apart as she fell apart".

Her state seems to concern various colleagues, with 'House of Gucci' director Ridley Scott making an intervention.

"Ridley said, 'I don’t want you traumatizing yourself,' and I said, 'I already have. I’ve already been through this anyway. I might as well give it to you'. And he said, 'Well, leave it here and don’t do this to yourself anymore.' "

Gaga states that she "took the pain I feel from being attacked when I was a young girl, from feeling left behind by people that I love, from feeling trapped that I can’t go out into a world that I love. I took that pain and I gave it to her."

Throughout the interview, Gaga shows that see has a very unique view of her own acting. "It’s my job to be a vehicle for the artist to tell their story."

On future plans, she aims to improve herself on screen and try not to be overwhelmed by the emotion of her roles. "I’m actually excited to learn how, and I think that I can," she says. "I think that that’s my new venture."

Lady Gaga stars in 'House of Gucci', which hits cinemas on November 26.
