The suits in Warner Bros. won’t be happy.
The reviews of Zach Snyder/Joss Whedon’s Justice League have been, let’s just say, mixed. It currently stands at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes and you can read our review here.
And according to projections based on early showing numbers, it doesn’t look set to be a commercial success either.
The DC movie had been expected to clear $110 million in its opening weekend, but that figure has since been rounded down to a projected $95 million. While there’s still time for it to recoup some of those losses, it looks highly unlikely it will ever come close to its whopping $300 million budget. Not good.
In comparison to Justice League’s $95 million, the opening weekend numbers of the other four DCEU movies went as follows- Wonder Woman ($103 million), Man of Steel ($116 million), Suicide Squad ($133.7 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).
Executives will be heartened by the fact that Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman also had a slow opening weekend but went on to become DCEU’s highest grossing movie at the box office.
Still. It’s hard to see that being repeated here.
