She's right
Those were the days; we'd just stand in front of the Hugh Grant poster just on our bedroom wall, and we'd just pretend to ask him to love us. We could recite the "I don't hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all" poem from '10 Things I Hate About You' off by heart. It was the peak of RomComs and no decade has come close since.
Julia Roberts is romantic comedy royalty; 'Pretty Woman', 'My Best Friend's Wedding', and 'Runaway Bride' were 90s staples that set the standard for the entire genre, and we're not sure anything since has quite measured up.
It's been 21 years since Roberts was a romantic lead and frankly, we took her forgranted while we had her. Thankfully she's got a movie on the way with George Clooney to give us what we've been missing for so long.
Her upcoming movie 'Ticket to Paradise' with Mr Clooney could be something of a 90s-esque masterpiece, since it's got all the ingredients (Roberts and Clooney) and is made by the directors of 'Mamma Mia'.
The film will feature Clooney and Roberts as ex-husband and wife who are attending their daughter's wedding abroad — a marriage that neither of them are too keen on by the sounds of things.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Roberts talked about the Golden Age of romantic films, "I think we didn’t appreciate the bumper crop of romantic comedies that we had then,” explaining that, “You don’t see all the effort and puppet strings because it’s fun and sweet and people are laughing and kissing and being mischievous".
It's often a genre that's sneered at. The same can be said for reality dating shows, so what is it about romance that makes us roll our eyes? Perhaps, it's because getting it right onscreen is a tricky business.
Roberts pondered "This is a genre that I love to participate in and watch, and I think they are hard to get right. There is a really simple math to it, but how do you make it special? How do you keep people interested when you can kind of predict what is coming?".
That said, we're pretty excited for 'Ticket to Paradise'. Especially since Roberts has backed it so hard by literally taking on a lead role. Part of her reason for stepping away from the genre was because she hadn't found anything as good as the likes of her 90s classics. That is, until now.
'Ticket to Paradise' is out in cinemas on the 16th of September.
