Johnny Depp is really not having a good run of it lately. Now, don’t get me wrong, he's still Johnny Depp (and good for him), but after the critical mauling of the last Pirates film and now financial bombing of his latest flick, Dark Shadows, he could've done without this news. I'm not talking about his separation...
Depp's currently shooting blockbuster The Lone Ranger has spiralled out of budget, and is now back at the $250 million that funding studio Disney initially baulked at. But that's not the bad news, oh no, the bad news is actually that his other adaptation, The Thin Man, has just had the skids put on it. Depp's Pirate's 4 helmer Rob Marshall was due to helm the flick, about a bickering couple who solve mysteries. Warner Bros are the studio behind the film, and they have budgetary concerns, while Depp apparently wants to actually take a break between films (to sack his agent, maybe?).
The Lone Ranger is not due until next summer, but it needs to do well for Depp to regain some box-office clout and credibility. The fact that Gore Verbinski's directing does not bode well for this - these men seem to evoke an indulgence in each other... Tim Burton must get jello.
