JJ Abrams has finally confirmed that he will direct a sequel to one of the blockbusters of last summer, Star Trek.

The one man studio had never confirmed his involvement as helmer until now. According to Vulture, The script will reportedly be completed by the end of this month and Abrams is scheduled to start shooting in the winter. The first film was a huge critical and financial success and cemented Abrams as a director to watch; his work on Mission Impossible 3 wasn't universally acclaimed - I still think he did a great job.

It's assumed that all of the core cast, including Chris Pine, Zoe Salanda and former Galway resident Zachary Quinto, will return. The film is expected December 2012 at the earliest, and possibly the summer 2013 - which may be more likely given the amount of post production needed. Abrams last directed the hugely enjoyable Super 8.
