Comedy star says he would have sued Smith for $200 million dollars after incident

Jim Carrey has weighed in on the Will Smith Oscars incident.

The star has called out Hollywood for being "spineless" by applauding Smith as he accepted the Best Actor award.

Speaking to CBS' 'This Morning', Carrey said he was "sickened" by the standing ovation.

"I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore."

Carrey stated that Smith "should have been arrested" for striking out at Chris Rock at Sunday night's ceremony.

"I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous; that insult is going to last a very long time."

To Carrey's point, the video has now amassed nearly 80 million views on YouTube alone.

"If you want to yell from the audience and disapprove or show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words."

He added "I wish him the best, I really do. I don’t have anything against Will Smith, he’s done great things. But that was not a good moment."

Carrey was speaking to CBS to promote his new film 'Sonic The Hedgehog 2', and said that the Smith incident was "selfish."

"It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment last night, a lot of people worked really hard to get to that place."

"To have their moment in the sun, to get their award for the really hard work they did, it is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you are nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion that you have to do."

"It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing."

To Smith's end, the actor has apologised for the incident, saying that "violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive".

The incident was triggered by Chris Rock making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's appearance, to which Will Smith reacted negatively.

Rock cracked a joke about looking forward to seeing Pinkett Smith in 'GI Jane 2', in reference to Pinkett Smith's shaved head.

Over the years, Jada Pinkett Smith has experienced alopecia and has openly discussed her experiences with the ailment.
