If ever there was an example of a core bad idea being surrounded by talent, it's Passengers.
You had Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, buzzy foreign director Morten Tyldum behind the camera, a seeming intelligent-looking sci-fi drama that wasn't all special effects, but the core idea was basically that of Stockholm Syndrome. Chris Pratt's roguish engineer is woken up 90 years early, and decides to force a woman to wake up so he can have some company.
That right there is the core of a bad idea. For Jennifer Lawrence, however, she's convinced the film is still good. In an interview with Vogue, Lawrence defended Passengers - but admitted she should have pushed for her to open at the start of the film rather than it be revealed that Pratt woke her.
"I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it," said Lawrence. "I thought the script was beautiful — it was this tainted, complicated love story. It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on."
Such as it being a fundamentally bad idea to begin with, J-Law.
