The acclaimed filmmaker was 58

The Canadian died suddenly in his cabin over the holiday period.

Critically acclaimed director Jean-Marc Vallée has passed away at the age of 58.

Vallée, known for directing some of the most thought-provoking and hard-hitting drama productions in Hollywood, passed away at his cabin in Canada this past weekend.

According to Deadline's co-editor in chief Mike Fleming Jr, the director: "Passed away at his cabin outside Quebec City, and that his family and close advisors are in shock."

Jean-Marc Vallée was known for directing the Oscar-winning drama 'Dallas Buyers Club' starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. He also directed the Oscar-nominated film 'Wild' starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern.

Vallée paired with Witherspoon and Dern once again on HBO's 'Big Little Lies', which won two Emmy Awards. He directed and produced the series, which also starred Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz. He also directed Amy Adams in the Golden Globe-winning TV mini-series 'Sharp Objects'.

HBO said in a statement: "Jean-Marc Vallée was a brilliant, fiercely dedicated filmmaker, a truly phenomenal talent who infused every scene with a deeply visceral, emotional truth. He was also a hugely caring man who invested his whole self alongside every actor he directed. We are shocked at the news of his sudden death, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his sons, Alex and Émile, his extended family, and his longtime producing partner, Nathan Ross."

'Dallas Buyers Club' producer Nathan Ross said in a statement about his friend: "Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed.

"He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on."
